A flavor enhancer used to provide a savory (Umami) taste. Typically produced by fermenting sugar beets, molasses, or corn.
Vegan / Vegetarian?
95% of modern MSG is vegan, but strict vegans verify the fermentation enzymes.
Fatwa Rulings
While the base product is plant-fermented (Halal), the enzymes used during the fermentation process can sometimes be derived from animals (including pork). Thus, uncertified MSG is considered DOUBTFUL (Mushbooh).
